Municipal Theatre

The building was constructed opposite the Castello estense (Estense Castle) between 1790 and 1798 with the aim of promoting the role of the theatre in the cultural life of the city.
In 1964, after a long period of inactivity and extensive restoration, the Theatre was reopened to the public and soon became renowned throughout Italy for the quality of its calendar. It now boasts an exciting annual programme of prose, dance, opera, music and children's theatre, and is a mecca for aficionados from all over the globe.
Since the 1990s, Ferrara Municipal Theatre has been actively involved in hosting top-flight productions of opera, choreography and prose.
in addition to Mestro Claudio Abbado, a stalwart of the Theatre's opera season and the Ferrara Musica concert programme, theatregoers can delight in the performances of such luminaries as Pina Bausch, Mario Martone, Toni Servillo, Luca Ronconi, Sasha Waltz and Robert Wilson.
